Federer claims 99th ATP title with Basel triumph

Copil upset expectations of a Federer final against Alexander Zverev in a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-4 win over the fifth-ranked German in the earlier semifinal.

The 37-year-old was unable to control his emotions after the straight-set win over qualifier Marius Copil in the final of the ATP 500 tournament.

"It's very hard for me to explain how it feels like", he said.

"I was trying to win one or two matches here just to stay there but now, being in the final, it's an unbelievable achievement for me".

Anderson won in three sets in their only meeting this season.

In the third, Copil kept pace, with Zverev faltering on serve in the 10th game and his opponent taking advantage with a cross-court volley victor to advance amid cheers for the underdog.

The top-seeded Swiss rallied from trailing by a service break in each set against the 93rd-ranked Romanian, whose serve was measured at 243 kph (151 mph) in his opening service game. Federer has never lost a championship match to an opponent ranked below World Number 87.

"I made a promise to my fans to say a few words in French as well so here we are", he said in French.

"But winning is fun, winning gives you confidence and that's what I'll need if I want to do well in London and beat the best over there, so I hope that this confidence I gained from here is going to help me there".

There were four consecutive breaks of serve during an erratic second set, but a big forehand victor earned Simon a crucial third break and a 5-4 lead that he did not relinquish.

After tamely surrendering the first set in 20 minutes, Medvedev found himself trailing 5-1 in the second but managed to fend off a match point and hold serve.

"I think I had very good tactics against him - but I still can't believe this".

Standing between Federer and what would be his ninth career title at his hometown tournament is the unfancied Copil, who beat world number six Marin Cilic earlier in the week.
