Canelo Alvarez signs highest-earning sports contract of all time

Over-the-top (OTT) sports streaming service DAZN has signed Mexican boxing icon Canelo Alvarez to a five-year, 11-fight deal worth an eye-watering US$365 million.

The previous record holder for total dollars was baseball player Giancarlo Stanton who signed a 13-year $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins back in 2014.

He successfully walked down Gennady Golovkin in their heated rematch last month en route to a unanimous victory over his rival, exorcising his detractors who wondered if he could defeat "GGG" clean.

In the crossover from Mayweather's retirement to Alvarez's ensuing dominance up the weight classes, the pay-per-view crown was nearly passed over to the Latino fighter.

Lionel Messi, who earned $111 million past year, is likely to be his main competition for the highest-earning athlete title, but reports indicate that Alvarez could have earned upwards of $120 million for 2018 by the time of his debut fight with DAZN.

The Alvarez partnership - $365 million for rights to his next 11 fights, according to a person familiar with the agreement - is the richest single-athlete contract in sports history. "The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the US$70 or US$80 for my fights on pay-per-view".

"We are thrilled to be exclusive partners with Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya", added John Skipper, executive chairman of DAZN Group. Canelo has never fought at super middleweight and he's never fought anyone with the size that Rocky Fielding has.

'If he wants to make the fight then he can deal directly with me, but I'm going to post things on Instagram offending people'. "He said, our first meeting with him over two weeks ago, he came to our office and said, 'I've got a blank check, I'm not leaving until we make a deal.' And he put his money where his mouth is".

Alvarez plans to fight twice a year, and the service will include those bouts as part of its $9.99 monthly fee. So really, who's still winning?
