US Open: Nadal outlasts Thiem to reach semis

After dropping the first set, 6-0, in a lackadaisical performance, Nadal fought back throughout the 4-hour 49-minute match to ultimately win, 0-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5).

NEW YORK: Dominic Thiem admitted he´s "not sure" if he can defeat defending champion Rafael Nadal at the US Open and reach the semi-finals.

US Open champion Rafael Nadal overcame a rare bagel and a relentless challenge from Dominic Thiem in an epic five-set quarter-final clash lasting nearly five hours in NY.

"What is important about this match is the level of tennis, the dramatic match", Nadal said in his news conference shortly after play ended.

The marathon tussle continued in the fifth and final set, Thiem fending off a triple break point by coming from love-40 down to make Nadal serve to stay in the championship and three-time US Open victor did before prevailing in a do-or-die tie-breaker.

The semifinal will pit Nadal against third seed and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro for the second successive Grand Slam. He has plenty of time to win.

"After that first set", Nadal said, "the match became more normal".

Nadal had to regroup again for the fifth set. In fact, Nadal never faced match point, and Thiem faced only one all night. For the rest of us who were watching in Ashe Stadium or on TV until 2:04 a.m. Wednesday morning, the memory will be just as long-lasting, but a lot happier.

"The match was special for its different phases", Nadal said afterwards.

Thiem made his intentions clear after clinching the opening set 6-0 as he made the Spaniard sweat hard to earn points in the quarter-finals clash.

The top-ranked Nadal captured his 11th title in Paris by beating Thiem in straight sets in June.

The two big men battered each other to near exhaustion in the heat and humidity but it was the third seed who proved the stronger to prevail 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in three-and-a-half hours.

The Nadal who was gassed and wearing a cooling vest during breaks in the first set was no more. "Have been a very tough start for me".

"I just wish him all the very very best".

"It's going to be stuck in my mind", he said.

Stiller and Nadal go way back, as the actor has participated in charity tennis events with Nadal in the past.

"I would say the first really epic match that I played". After saving two break points in game two, Thiem broke in the very next game after a backhand error from Rafa who had to save three break points in game five to stay in contention. Having looked the more tired of the two, it was Nadal who was applying the greater pressure and at 5-5, 0-40 it seemed this was his chance.
