Tropical Storm Norman forecast to reach hurricane strength today

Forecasters are keeping tabs on a pair of hurricanes spinning in the Eastern Pacific far east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands.

With the peak of hurricane season close at hand, there are signs that the tropical Atlantic may soon spring to life with the potential for direct impact on the coastal United States in the days ahead.

Located about 2,549 miles west of Hilo at eleven a.m., Norman clocked in with maximum sustained winds of Seventy five mph and used to be headed west at 9 mph, in step with the National Storm Heart. Mountain View on the Big Island recorded 52.02 inches (132 centimeters) of rain from August 22 through Sunday.

It was located 1,230 miles east-southeast of Hilo and was moving west at 13 mph.

Throughout today Hawaii is likely to experience showers and heavy rains, as the tail end of Hurricane Lane passes by. As the system continues to move away from the Mexican coast, environmental conditions over the next 5 days appear to be conducive for this wave to become a tropical depression this weekend or into next week.

Tropical Storm Norman strengthened somewhat overnight and is forecast to turn out to be a typhoon this day.
