The Kavanaugh-Ford Hearing Will Be A Craven, Pointless Spectacle

Feinstein, who entered Congress in the wake of the explosive Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, was an initial recipient of a letter by Christine Blasey Ford alleging Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her during a house party decades ago.

She said that Kavanaugh's declaration of "innocence" and lack of sexual inactivity in high school on Fox News is a lie.

Blasey Ford said the incident left her "drastically altered", but it was her "civic duty" to tell lawmakers what happened.

George Hartmann, a spokesman for Republicans on the Judiciary Committee, said the hearing is still going forward Thursday as scheduled.

Even as the governor spoke, another serious allegation against Kavanaugh was released.

Swetnick, who recalled seeing Kavanaugh at multiple parties in the 1980s, said she herself was raped at a party "where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present", she said in the statement.

"I don't want to be in a position where people say, "No, thanks".

Both Democrats and Republicans were on the call but on the latter party were allowed to ask questions. "That kind of depends upon what happens tomorrow", Grassley said.

"It's possible I'll hear that and I'll say, 'Hey, I'll change my mind, '" Trump said.

"I do not know how I will assess the credibility of these witnesses - these human beings - on the grave matters that will be testified to, because I have not yet heard a word of their testimony", he said.

The panel will see both witnesses face five minutes of questioning from each senator on the panel, or a lawyer if senators choose to yield their time. Some Republicans, including Trump, have dismissed the allegations as part of a Democratic smear campaign created to derail Kavanaugh's confirmation.

He blamed regional countries and their "US masters" for the attack, adding that Iran would respond "swiftly and decisively". Iran will be scrambling to determine the motives for the Saturday's high-profile attack as it faces growing US pressure.

In both instances, a respected and successful female professor reluctantly came forward with "11th-hour" allegations of past sexual misconduct against a Republican nominee to the high court.

Swetnick, whose allegations emerged on Wednesday, said she witnessed efforts by Kavanaugh and others to get girls drunk at parties so that they could be raped.

At the United Nations, meanwhile, President Donald Trump said on the eve of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Mr Kavanaugh and Ms Ford that Republicans have been "nice" and "respectful" in their treatment of Ms Ford.

The complainant said the writer's daughter and several friends were with Kavanaugh in 1998 when Kavanaugh assaulted a woman he was dating, who was a friend of the person's daughter.

"I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents".

"I lament how this hearing has come about", he added, noting that Ford's allegations emerged only after Kavanaugh's original confirmation hearing earlier this month was over. She says they thrust her into an upstairs bedroom at the house and locked the door.

"Brett groped me and tried to take off my clothes".

Trump told reporters on Wednesday he believed the accusations against Kavanaugh were false, likening them to the sexual assault allegations made against him by as many as 17 women.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims she had sex once with Trump in 2006 and carried on a platonic relationship with him for about a year. She told The Washington Post that she was upset Trump won in 2016 because Kavanaugh could be a potential Supreme Court pick. He ended up attending that Ivy League School.

Two other women, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick, have also accused Mr Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct in the 1980s.
