South Connect : Bishop franco mulakkal interrpgated for 3rd day

The nun had accused the clergyman of repeatedly raping and having unnatural sex with her between 2014 and 2016, a charge denied by him. The police in this regard have said that they are under no pressure to refrain from arresting the Bishop if he were to be found guilty after the interrogation.

"We have sought legal consultations on the anticipatory bail plea that he has moved and we expect to get the advice on this Friday", Harishankar said, adding that by Friday, they will be able to take a holistic decision after looking into all aspects.

In June, a nun had complained that Mulakkal had raped her 13 times at the mission house in Kottayam district, over a period of two years from May 5, 2014.

The vehicle carrying the Bishop was directed to the Medical College Hospital when it reached Ettumanoor at around 11 pm after the Bishop complained of chest pain, sources said.

The lack of action provoked outrage and five nuns - in a rare show of dissent within the Indian Church - and dozens of supporters staged days of protests.

Before the Catholic leader's arrest, BPCA noted, "Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been temporarily removed from his post 2.5 months after the allegations surfaced, in a slow action that has been condemned by many Indian people of all diversities". He said the investigating officer was free to take a call on the issue. Backed by activists and students, the nuns demanded the bishop be prosecuted.

In a letter, the Apostolic Nunciature in India said, "The Holy Father has received the request of Rt Rev Bishop Franco Mulakkal to be temporarily relieved of his pastoral responsibilities in Diocese of Jullundur".

Mulakkal leaves for Crime Branch (CID) in Kochi where he will be interrogated by a 5-member team for the second day.

"He is charged with rape", said inspector general Vijay Sakhare in the city of Kochi.
