Jets vs. Lions: Final Week 1 injury and weather report

Even Todd Bowles had to smile at this one.

The franchise's search has been long, but Darnold seemed to happen so fast-the Jets moving on after losing the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes and just a few days later trading up for the No. 3 overall pick, and the once-presumed No. 1 overall pick still being on the board when it was their turn, and the announcement of him as the opening-day starter a week ago coming to the surprise of exactly zero people. Or as giddy as Bowles gets. But he's also already showcased a lot of the poise and movement that convinced the Jets to take him No. 3 overall in April - enough that Patricia should be anxious if someone other than Ezekiel Ansah and Darius Slay can't make big plays Monday night.

The referee for the game is Bill Vinovich, who is refereeing his ninth Jets game since 2004, including the 2006 playoff game at New England and the 2015 home win over Miami. The rookie quarterback thought he played "pretty well", but you saw more than that, and so did the players who suited up next to him, who cheered him on from the sidelines, who told him they weren't anxious after he threw a pick-six on the very first play of his first-ever National Football League game.

The Jets quarterback finished with respectable figures of 198 yards from 16 completions out of 21 attempts, including two touchdowns.

Stafford threw four interceptions - one shy of his career high - and left the game briefly in the third quarter after being hit from the front and back by the swarming, hard-hitting Jets. Did ANYONE even dream of this happening?

After a lopsided affair at Ford Field in which Stafford threw four interceptions en route to a 48-17 loss, Jets linebacker Darron Lee made a bold proclamation. It was the Jets' first defensive touchdown since 2013. Just 67 seconds later, the Jets scored again on a 78-yard punt return by Andre Roberts.

The Jets blew the game open with a 31-point third quarter. They found out quickly Patricia was bringing a change of pace: a demonstrative and louder leader.

Unruffled, Darnold led the Jets on their first scoring drive later in the quarter, with Crowell producing a 6-yard TD run.

But the Jets answered in resounding fashion.

The 21-year-old Darnold became the youngest quarterback to start a season opener since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, and he got off to an inauspicious start. Enunwa took a short pass and fought his way into the end zone for the 24-17 lead.

"You get a pick-6 on the first thing", defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois said. It was the first of two interceptions by Lee.

Quandre Diggs intercepted his ill-advised pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown 20 seconds into the game.

But the game could not have gotten off to a worse start for Darnold.

Darnold was 11 of 15 for 122 yards after two quarters. Darnold made the mistake of throwing back across the field on the play, which was designed for him to roll right.
