GOP threatens Monday vote on Kavanaugh unless accuser testifies

President Donald Trump and GOP leaders are seeking to usher the 53-year-old Kavanaugh onto the high court by the October 1 start of its new session and before the November elections, when Democrats are mounting a robust drive to grab congressional control.

Ford accuses Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a party back in high school. Kavanaugh and his wife also had received threats, a senior White House official said.

Taking direct aim at the credibility of Kavanaugh's accuser, California professor Christine Blasey Ford, Trump wrote, "I have no doubt that, if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities by either her or her loving parents".

Friday was the latest in a string of tumultuous days for Kavanaugh, whose ascension to the Supreme Court seemed a sure bet until Ford emerged last weekend and provided details of the alleged assault.

Trump spent most of the week unusually restrained and heeding the tone set publicly by counselor Kellyanne Conway.

Grassley said he will schedule a hearing for Wednesday, not Thursday, as Ford prefers.

- ChuckGrassley (@ChuckGrassley) September 22, 2018Five times now we hv granted extension for Dr Ford to decide if she wants to proceed w her desire stated one wk ago that she wants to tell senate her story Dr Ford if u changed ur mind say so so we can move on I want to hear ur testimony.

Blasey's lawyer, Debra Katz, responded with a blistering email, accusing Grassley's aides of pressuring her client "to agree to conditions you find advantageous to the nominee", and of imposing "aggressive and artificial deadlines" whose "sole objective is to bully Dr Ford and deprive her of the ability to make a considered decision that has life-altering implications for her and her family". "I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place".

He also repeated a question he asked on Fox News Thursday night in Las Vegas: "The radical left lawyers want the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get involved NOW". Trump has refused to ask for that.

And then President Donald Trump tweeted.

Amazon And Netflix Make History At The 2018 Emmy Awards
And we can't forget director Glenn Weiss - who proposed to his girlfriend during his acceptance speech. During the Primetime telecast, Netflix won 7 Emmys, HBO won 6, Amazon won 5, and FX won 5.

"We know allegations of sexual assault are one of the most unreported crimes that exist", Ms Collins said at an event in Portland, the newspaper said.

"I think Republicans have the leg up simply because they have the numbers, given no one deflects", Miller said. "The host of that party added his name to this letter to the Judiciary Committee attesting to Kavanaugh's character". As of Friday, he was scheduled to do so on Monday.

He also rejected her proposal that she testify after Kavanaugh, a position lawyers consider advantageous because it gives them a chance to rebut accusations. I hope so. I'd like to believe in redemption.

NBC News and The Wall Street Journal released poll results this week claiming that more Americans now oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation than support it.

-Monday is too soon. Lawyers for Blasey say that if a lawyer conducts the questioning, instead of senators, the hearing could take on a prosecutorial tone.

Trump's strategy until Friday had been to avoid comment on Ford while repeatedly praising Kavanaugh and casting the judge as a victim of a character assassination.

Her lawyers previously suggested that the committee's senators question their client, not an outside counsel.

But Republicans have the toughest challenge in the Department of How It Looks.

Trump's tweet infuriated many who've long argued that women are frequently overwhelmed, confused and ashamed by sexual attacks and keep silent or even bury the memory without confiding with anyone.

Inside the Senate, split 51-49, only six Republicans are women. The committee's 11 Republicans - all men - have been seeking an outside female attorney to interrogate Ford, mindful of the election-season impression that could be left by men trying to pick apart a woman's assertion of a sexual attack. Biden, who chaired the Thomas hearing and is considering running for president, said he regrets the way Hill was treated. She is the author of several books about politics, religion and women's rights, and was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize for public service in 2018 for reporting on workplace sexual harassment issues. He initially gave Ford's attorneys until Friday at 10 p.m. ET to respond to a request to have Ford testify to lawmakers. Doing so would nearly certainly evoke the panel's handing of Hill and potentially alienate suburban women voters who could decide the elections and control of the House and Senate.
