Djokovic beats Del Potro to win 2018 US Open

Djokovic, who was seeded sixth, is one of only eight men to win the Wimbledon-US Open double and has now accomplished that feat for a third time.

Novak Djokovic was just too good for Juan Martin del Potro in Sunday's United States open final, racing away to a straight sets win and his third title in NY.

When he defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer back-to-back to claim the 2009 US Open he was just 20 years old.

It's awesome. I don't feel sad that I couldn't win grand slams because of them.

Djokovic, playing in his eighth final in NY and already the champion in 2011 and 2015, is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the record 20 held by Roger Federer.

All that frustration was washed away when he struck the overhead victor to clinch victory over Del Potro, Djokovic falling to his back, arms and legs spread savouring the moment.

It enabled Djokovic to go on and take the second-set tie-break following four unforced errors from Del Potro's forehand - including one on set point.

Since playing on the grass at Queen's Club in June, Djokovic has only lost two matches, while he extended his imposing winning record over Del Potro to 15-4.

Unruffled, Darnold led the Jets on their first scoring drive later in the quarter, with Crowell producing a 6-yard TD run. Darnold made the mistake of throwing back across the field on the play, which was designed for him to roll right.

'I'll have some probably now, ' Millman said.

In New York, while some of his fiercest rivals fell by the wayside over a bruis- ing fortnight, Djokovic did not let the intense heat or any of his opponents push him off his path to a third title at Flushing Meadows. They hadn't even dropped a set over that run until Babos and Mladenovic got them in the first set on Sunday.

Argentine third seed Del Potro, 29, was playing his first Grand Slam final since winning the 2009 US Open, having nearly quit the game in 2015 because of multiple wrist injures.

Djokovic's most hard opponent this tournament has been the heat and humidity, so Sunday's cool and wet conditions, resulting in the roof being shut on Arthur Ashe Stadium, were perfectly to his liking.

"I feel like these guys, rivalries with these guys, matches with Federer and Nadal, have made me the player I am, have shaped me into the player I am". I watched him win one of his first Wimbledon championships, and I grew up playing and thinking that one day I'll be able to do what he does. Djokovic's fourth US Open trophy meant he, Nadal and Federer had now won 50 of the past 60 majors.

The imperious Swiss star won the first of his 20-and-counting grand slam titles at Wimbledon in 2003. Del Potro would not rue how many of those could have been his had he been injury-free all those years.

He said: "I think I did a good tournament, but this is a tough loss for me".

"But I believe in the mindset that you can only embrace this present moment and I don't want to compare myself with the player and the person I was two or three years ago because my life turned upside down".
