Bezos: HQ2 Decision Coming By End of Year

Trump has described The Washington Post as Amazon's "chief lobbyist".

But even though Bezos was mum on headquarters news, he did perhaps reveal some insight into his decision-making process as he explained how he chose to commit $2 billion in charity to help homeless families and boost early childhood education.

Bezos said early childhood education is a critical area and that "the money spent there is going to pay huge dividends for decades".

Washington Post owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos - no stranger to attacks on his companies and himself from President Trump - said that the president should welcome media scrutiny instead of bashing journalists. There will also be full scholarships for Montessori-inspired preschools in "underserved" communities, he said.

President Trump has not only repeatedly called out the Post for purveying fake news, but has long accused Amazon of avoiding taxes and incurring major loses to U.S. Postal Service's bottom line.

"We are so inventive that whatever regulations are promulgated, that will not stop us from serving customers", Bezos said in a question-and-answer session at a dinner hosted by the Economic Club of Washington.

Hurricane Florence speeds up, intensifies
This map does not indicate the hurricane's size, but it does show the hurricane's current projected path. With winds of up to 150mph forecast, Florence will likely fell tree limbs and trigger power outages.

More than a year ago, Bezos posted to Twitter a request for suggestions on philanthropic initiatives created to make a difference in the short term.

He said he did not know how much money he would eventually give away.

"It's unsafe to demonise the media", Mr Bezos said.

Amazon has faced criticism for paying little in taxes, which stems in part from its historically low profits.

While the online retail giant's presence made Seattle the fastest-growing big city in the USA, it also has taken a toll on its residents, driving up rent prices, clogging traffic and overwhelming public transportation. "It's unsafe to say they are the enemy of the people". Business innovators who invent products that empower, authors who write books that inspire, government officials who serve their communities, teachers, doctors, carpenters, entertainers who make us laugh and cry, parents who raise children who go on to live lives of courage and compassion, and many more.

Mr Bezos, whose Amazon fortune has made him the world's richest person, added that he has had "a couple of conversations" with Mr Trump, but declined to say what was discussed. "I'll keep my conversations with the president to myself", Bezos said. Most important among those will be genuine, intense customer obsession. We will build an organization to directly operate these preschools.
