'America was always great': Meghan McCain pays tribute to father

The motorcade carrying McCain's flag-draped casket paused at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on its way to the cathedral, and his widow, Cindy McCain, placed a ceremonial wreath there.

McCain's past year in office was marked by his confrontation with President Donald Trump.

McCain (R-Ariz.), a six-term senator and two-time presidential candidate, died of brain cancer on August 25 at the age of 81.

Obama denounced a politics "that pretends to be courageous and tough, but in fact is born of fear". John called on us to be bigger than that. He noted McCain "made us better presidents".

George W Bush said McCain "loved freedom with a passion".

"John's voice will always come as a whisper over our shoulder - we are better than this, America is better than this", Mr Bush said.

The View co-host Meghan McCain couldn't help but break down in tears as she was delivering a very touching eulogy at her father John McCain's memorial service. His daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner, both White House advisers, attended the service.

The audience of Washington's military, civilian and other leaders burst into applause. His wife and children accompanied him into the Cathedral, as did his 106-year-old mother, Roberta McCain. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and former chief of staff to McCain Mark Salter are also serving as pallbearers, among others.

McCain was a member of the Academy's Class of 1958. "In the process, rivalry melted away", he said.

Trump was to remain in Washington.

Trump has frequented his golf courses in Virginia, New Jersey and Florida throughout his presidency, though the White House often will not say if he plays.

Of those who spoke at yesterday's ceremony, fellow Republican Mitch McConnell had perhaps the fullest sense of the McCain experience.

McCain's family asked before his death that President Donald Trump, who the senator had long feuded with, not attend his funeral services.

McCain's design of his service was seen as a final message to the country about his wish for bipartisanship.

It definitely looks like the crowd in attendance, which included no less than three former presidents, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, agreed with her Trump diss.

John McCain's daughter and two former presidents led a public rebuke of President Donald Trump's divisive politics at the late senator's memorial service Saturday in a call for a return to civility among the nation's leaders.

Obama, who triumphed over McCain in the 2008 Presidential Election, said that despite their differences, McCain and he shared a "fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed". He was critical of Trump until the end, slamming his meeting with Putin in July as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in recent memory".
