Amazon And Netflix Make History At The 2018 Emmy Awards

Amazon And Netflix Make History At The 2018 Emmy Awards

Netflix and HBO tied for the most number of awards, at 23 each.

Saturday Night Live won the award for best variety sketch series.

HBO's record-breaking fantasy epic Game of Thrones stormed back onto the Emmys stage on Monday, winning the coveted best drama series prize on a night full of surprises, including an on-air marriage proposal that stunned the audience.

That's how you get shows like "Modern Family" and "Mad Men" and actors like Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory") and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep") that win over and over (and over and over) again. So were the Emmys destined to become a popularity contest with results more like the SAG Awards, where we often see results like seven straight wins for Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")? It's the first time the Television Academy selected a TV series from a streaming service in this category.

Claire Foy beat presumed front runner Elisabeth Moss, star of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, to win for her quiet but formidable portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Netflix drama The Crown.

Djokovic beats Del Potro to win 2018 US Open
When he defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer back-to-back to claim the 2009 US Open he was just 20 years old. They hadn't even dropped a set over that run until Babos and Mladenovic got them in the first set on Sunday.

An African-American sweep of guest series actor awards at the recent creative arts Emmys suggested big changes ahead for the awards, which only recently have given significant honors to performers and creators of color.

Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", about a 1950s housewife who turns to standup comedy, took home the Emmy for best comedy series.

"One of the things I love the most about this's about a woman who is finding her voice anew", Ms. Brosnahan said. And we can't forget director Glenn Weiss - who proposed to his girlfriend during his acceptance speech.

During the Primetime telecast, Netflix won 7 Emmys, HBO won 6, Amazon won 5, and FX won 5.

And in one of the most rubber-stamped races at the Emmys, Best Reality-Competition Series where only three shows had ever won in 15 years, "RuPaul's Drag Race" eked out its first victory against four-time champ "The Voice".
