The Internet Was Not Impressed With the 2018 VMAs

"Alright, sit down, because I'm going to tell you a fabulous story", Cher said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. You are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story.

Cardi B started the show as frontrunner, narrowly taking more nominations than Jay-Z and Beyonce, who ended the evening with just one award - best cinematography - for their Louvre-shot video "Apeshit".

The Material Girl, clad in flowing black with flourishes of African jewelry and spiky headgear, gave the send-off to the late Queen of Soul before presenting the video of the year award to Camila Cabello. I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us. "I needed to go home and learn to play guitar, and that's exactly what I did".

Madonna said "Aretha" a mere four times during the seven-minute speech, but she uttered the words "I" and "me" more than 50 times. 'Cause I wasn't Madonna yet. "No, I didn't. I didn't say that".

But a flurry of viewers took to Twitter to complain about the attempted tribute. There's a connection, because none of this would've happened - could've happened - without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today. "Respect. Long live the queen".

"Does Madonna know Madonna didn't die?".

A few of the star's die-hard fans managed to shine a ray of light on the situation though, including one who called the tribute a "Great speech!"

Someone else used a Franklin GIF to point out the tribute's flaws. "She said while on an audition for a backup singing gig with a French disco producer she was asked to sing and chose "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman", one of Franklin's signature tunes.

"Where's Kanye when you need him?" wrote one user, making reference to the 2009 VMAs when Kanye West stormed the stage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech and grabbed the microphone from Swift to announce Beyoncé deserved the award.

Madonna's rambling tribute was both heartfelt and a cautionary tale about what happens when you reach a certain stratosphere where the obscene wealth and fame insulates you from people who might challenge your shitty ideas and ultimately protect you from your own delusions.

"#Madonna is demonstrating a dynamic performance of peak white womanhood".
