Sunil Gavaskar feels India didn’t play adequate practice matches in England

Chasing 194 in the fourth innings, India had a great chance of winning, provided their skipper Virat Kohli stayed till the end.

After picking up four wickets in India's first innings, he struck what turned out to be a crucial 63-run knock on the third day to give England a total to defend. "I would definitely say he was a batting all-rounder and in time, I think this will be more and more his role for Surrey and England", Dan Pratt, Head of Cricket at Wellington college tells Sportstar on a day his protege bagged the Man-of-the-Match award in England's 1,000th Test.

India captain Virat Kohli answered his critics in style with a stunning 149 in India's first innings at Edgbaston, but it wasn't enough to secure victory for his team with India losing by a slender margin of 31 runs.

"It was an awesome spell from Ben Stokes this morning to turn the game around".

I'm really proud of the group. "So I thought that they should have played a little bit more", Gavaskar added.

Asked where his will to win came from, Curran replied: "I think I've learned that as I've grown up, with two very competitive brothers in the back-garden cricket".

England won a gripping first Test against India at Edgbaston by 31 runs on Saturday and social-media users loved it.

There have also been reports that North Korea is operating a uranium enrichment facility in secret. The U.S., he added , has "to know what they have before talking about caps and arms control".

Meanwhile Kohli urged India to remain "positive and fearless" during the rest of the series.

A year ago, the Team India management (dominated on overseas tours by the captain Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri) decided that India's best ODI opening batsmen were Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan and that there would be no tinkering with the ODI squad, thereby effectively closing the door on the Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahjane.

"We showed character at times but England were relentless in the areas they hit".

Ishant had picked up 5-51 in the second innings at Edgbaston. Hopefully we will build on that. It has played tests against nine teams - India, Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. We saw in this Test match that even in the 40th over, 50th over, the ball was moving around in the air as well as off the surface. "It can be three plus three day breaks between matches but not five days", Gavaskar said.

The immediate prize of Kohli was not to be, but second-best was Dinesh Karthik - ending a troublesome stand of 34 which had narrowed the margins while England's bowlers exhausted on Friday. England knew they needed early strikes and Anderson, their all-time leading Test wicket-taker, duly obliged when he had Karthik (20) caught low down by Dawid Malan at second slip off just the sixth ball of the day. Not too long ago he played a valiant Test innings on a treacherous Wanderers wicket.

"The way (Kohli) played (in the first Test) was high-class stuff". With exactly 200 runs across the Test - almost half his side's output - the right-hander has now usurped Steve Smith, the suspended former Australia captain, as the world's No 1 Test batsman. England's lineup, though, could be viewed as having similar deficiencies and not least against spin, with Ravi Ashwin fresh from seven wickets including Alastair Cook bowled twice.
