State reports its 1st horse West Nile virus cases this year

According to Interior Health, the risk of infection from handling birds is very low, but added people not use bare hands to handle wild birds, either dead or alive.

"As the fall approaches, it's vital to remember that mosquito bite protection should continue until the weather significantly cools", said Dr. Eden Wells, Chief Medical Executive at the MDHHS. About one in 150 infected people will become severely ill, and may experience symptoms such as a stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions, or paralysis.

Authorities again reminded residents and visitors Thursday to take steps to avoid mosquito bites and limit their exposure to West Nile and other mosquito-borne illnesses.

"Further cases are expected to be diagnosed in the coming period and West Nile virus infections are likely to occur in other geographical areas", it said.

The press release from the MDHHS stated that there have been eight confirmed cases with six of them happening in Oakland and Wayne Counties.

Residents should wear light coloured clothing, long trousers, long sleeves, as well as shoes and socks during peak mosquito times to prevent mosquito bites.

Some tips include: draining standing water to stop mosquitoes from multiplying and covering skin with clothes or repellent. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label.
