Seventh Death Tied To Carr Fire As PG&E Worker Killed

The fires have killed at least eight people, stretching the state's funds and resources thin as firefighters try to gain control. Those fires destroyed 55 homes and forced thousands of residents to flee their neighborhoods about 100 miles north of the city.

Ayeta is the seventh person to die in the huge blaze that has been burning for two weeks near Redding, where armies of firefighters and fleets of aircraft continue battling the flames about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of the OR state line.

Both areas remained under a "red flag warning" issued by the National Weather Service for strong winds, low relative humidity and temperatures topping 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), all conditions that can drive the growth of wildfires. The three males refused to leave causing the fire crew to divert three VLAT (Very Large Air Tanker) passes. "If today goes well, the River Fire is going to be in really good shape tonight", he said.

More than 4,500 firefighters have been battling the blaze for almost two weeks, facing triple-digit temperatures and winds up to 30 miles per hour, according to The Los Angeles Times.

To the southwest of Redding, new evacuations were ordered late Thursday at the Mendocino Complex, where twin fires have ravaged a combined 250 square miles, destroyed 41 residences and threatened 9,200 homes.

KQED's Lesley McClurg and Kat Snow reported for NPRthat the fires have had lasting impacts on residents there, "Confronting constant reminders of what fire can do has become a terrifying reality for people who survived last year's flames and are still piecing their lives back together".

The fire remained several miles from the evacuated communities along the eastern shore of the lake, but "it looks like there's dicey weather on the way", California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokeswoman Jane LaBoa said.

You would do anything to get her back and you would just be desperate for anything to come forward to get her back", he added. Sometimes I just feel her sitting on my shoulder. "I knew her phone was dead, but I sent her a text saying, 'I love you".

The larger one, the Ranch Fire, has consumed more than 207,000 acres, a lot of them in the Mendocino National Forest.

The River Fire is 35,278 acres and 50 percent contained.

Authorities said there are 17 major fires burning throughout California. Heavy timber and steep drainage continue to challenge firefighters, a Cal Fire incident update said.

The new evacuation area extends to the scar of the Pawnee Fire (in black on the map above), which burned 15,185 acres near the reservoir in June and July.

However, most evacuations were lifted by Saturday in and around Redding, where armies of firefighters and fleets of aircraft continue battling an huge blaze about 100 miles south of the OR line.

Blankenheim said crews face "extreme fire behavior" near Stonyford in Colusa County, with 40 miles of open fire line extending northwest into the Snow Mountain Wilderness.

California fire officials said Saturday that the two fires about 100 miles north grew to nearly 250 square miles (648 kilometers). The whirl uprooted trees and tore roofs from homes, Dykema said.
