Russia names Steven Seagal humanitarian envoy with US

"Everywhere you look in Russian Federation - the terms of Steven Seagal", wrote the editor of the Bureau of si-EN-EN in Moscow Nathan Hodge.

Action-movie star Steven Seagal has played a former Central Intelligence Agency agent, a hit man and a killer of criminals.

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Seagal has been appointed to the new role, which will apparently be unpaid.

Relations between the two countries have been fraught as US intelligence agencies have accused Russian Federation of interfering in the 2016 elections and have warned it could do so again in the November contests.

Seagal, who occasionally appears on Russian state television, said he welcomed the appointment, Reuters reported. The countries have also been at odds over the Syrian civil war and the Russian annexation of Crimea. Seagal said, "I've always had a very strong desire to do all I can to help improve Russian-American relations".

The Washington Post was unable to immediately reach Seagal for comment.

The renewed sanctions were among those lifted under a 2015 deal between world powers and Tehran on curbing Iran's nuclear program. The first set of USA sanctions against Iran that had been eased under the landmark nuclear accord have gone back into effect.

Seagal has been an ardent supporter of Putin, going so far as to defend his government against allegations of election meddling in the United States.

He is best known for dispatching baddies using karate chops and knives in a series of trashy 1990s films such as Under Siege and Hard to Kill.

Back in 2016, Steven Seagal was awarded Russian citizenship, likely because he was making so many trips to visit his friend Vladimir Putin. He attended Putin's recent swearing-in ceremony in May.

In the interview, Seagal also praised Putin as "a great world leader" and a "brilliant tactician".

President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter".
