Oscars To Launch A New 'Popular Film' Category

Oscars To Launch A New 'Popular Film' Category

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made a number of surprise announcements today regarding next year's Oscar ceremony, most of all that they will be adding a gold statue for "outstanding achievement in popular film".

Academy president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson wrote in a note to academy members, "We have heard from many of you about improvements needed to keep the Oscars and our Academy relevant in a changing world. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously", the message stated. The body stated that the smaller awards will be presented during the telecast's commercial breaks, with the winning moments aired later in the broadcast.

The Oscars have always been a bit of a popularity contest, but a new award for "outstanding achievement in popular film" is set to shake things up a bit.

-And starting in 2020, the telecast will move up to an earlier date, most likely to the chagrin of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, shifting from February 23rd to Sunday, February 9, 2020. The ceremony often runs close to four hours since all 24 categories are handed out on the air, from Best Picture all the way to Best Documentary Short.

When it comes to the Academy Awards, there's always been a divide of sorts when it comes to the movies that end up being nominated and popular, blockbuster films.

The 2018 awards show, which clocked in at nearly four hours, was the least-watched Oscars to date. It wasn't specified whether it would be added for the 91st Academy Awards this February. They're scooching up the broadcast a couple weeks earlier in February - but not until the 2020 telecast. 91st Oscars telecast is now scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Imran Khan- The ideal match for Pakistan
Modi also reiterated his "vision of peace and development in the entire neighbourhood" during his conversation with Imran Khan . Azharuddin believes Khan has a tough road ahead, especially when it comes to bilateral relations between India and Pakistan .

Does that mean even less Academy recognition for similar films now that they may have a separate category?

Essentially, with these changes, the Oscars are looking to become more like the MTV Movie Awards, and that's a damn shame.

Popular film? What is this? Regardless of whatever "criteria" they end up outlining, the AMPAS might as well just slap a dollar sign on the trophy's forehead and call it "Most Money Earned" (or "Best Cape").

However, others tweeted that they aren't too thrilled with the idea of the Academy only showing select categories live, with the other awards to be given out during commercial breaks.
