Manchester United defender set to leave Old Trafford this summer

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane is reportedly keen on succeeding Jose Mourinho as the manager of Manchester United.

Manchester United's lack of new signings combined with the uncertainty surrounding the team's strategies and form gives the club a very small chance of challenging for the Premier League title, former midfielder Paul Scholes has said. However following the World Cup in Russian Federation, that opportunity was no longer available.

Mourinho, however, has been at odds with United's hierarchy this summer over their refusal to sign an experienced central defender before the transfer window got shut last Thursday. I want to play in and win the Premier League, the best league in the world.

Intriguingly, Zidane now allegedly wants to replace Mourinho at Old Trafford, which is fascinating because it was Mourinho who first brought Zidane into the Real Madrid backroom setup back in 2010, and somewhat emulates how Mourinho replaced his former mentor in Louis van Gaal.

The Sun has claimed Mourinho has told the midfielder he can leave as long as he hands in a transfer request.

The Portuguese manager had warned United's board that the club face a "difficult season" if the squad was not improved.

Mourinho is still under contract at Manchester United and will continue as manager for the foreseeable future.

After starting the Premier League season with a victory over Leicester City, United are back in action on Sunday, August 20 against Brighton at the The American Express Community Stadium. Marcos Rojo made only 12 appearances last season as he missed a large chuck of games due to injury.
