The western media coverage on Palestine and Israel has been a point of contention for years now especially in the United Kingdom, with many media outlets accused of being biased toward Israel, including the BBC and their failure to report the Palestinian side of the struggle. Israel deployed its Iron Dome system and intercepted 25 launches, though several civilians were injured by shrapnel.

At least seven Israelis were injured by the rocket fire, including three in the border town of.

The Israeli army said on Thursday morning that it had pounded more than 140 targets in Gaza belonging to the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement.

Gaza health officials identified those killed overnight as Hamas fighter Ali Ghandour, 23-year-old Enas Khamas and her daughter Bayan.

"The escalation of the barbaric shelling of Gaza and the deliberate targeting of civilians [by Israel] is premeditated and the [Israeli] occupation will suffer the repercussions and pay a higher price for its crimes", he said, according to the news service.

Their deaths come as violence continues to flare up between Israel and Gaza's rulers from the Islamic militant Hamas.

Meanwhile, Palestinian media is reporting negotiations between Hamas and Egyptian official in Cairo are in the "advanced" stages, and Egypt is working to restore calm.

Israel has played down prospects for a comprehensive ceasefire, speaking in terms of a more limited quid-pro-quo.

Mladenov warned "if the current escalation, however, is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

The escalation has taken place against a backdrop of indirect talks in Cairo on a long-term ceasefire plan.
