Hurricane Lane churns towards Hawaii, residents stock up

Hurricane Lane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm as it lashed Hawaii on Thursday with high winds and torrential rains, touching off flash floods, landslides and raging surf as residents hunkered down to ride out the storm.

The center of the hurricane packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour was expected to move close to or over portions of the main islands later Thursday or Friday, bringing unsafe surf of 20 feet (6 meters) and a storm surge of up to 4 feet (1 meter), forecasters said. That storm's slow pace is resulting in flash flooding on the Big Island, where more than a foot of rain has already fallen and as much as 30 inches could be dumped by the time the storm passes.

Hawaii Gov. David Ige advised residents Wednesday to prepare at least two weeks worth of supplies. Ahead of the hurricane's landfall, drenching rains began falling officials opened shelters.

AccuWeather reports that Lane has the potential to be the single-costliest hurricane in recorded history of Hawaii and may end up causing the most expensive hurricane damage in all of the country for the 2018 hurricane season. "We're going to the parks and try to hit every part of the homeless community", said Sgt. Joseph O'Neal, Honolulu Police Department Community Outreach Division.

Hurricane winds (74 miles per hour and higher) could hit the Big Island and Maui County on Thursday.

Goldstein said a direct strike is not needed to see a significant impact from such a strong hurricane.

Gavin Shigesato, a weather service meteorologist from Honolulu, said: "Even though the eye is south of the Big Island, we are seeing excessive rainfall already affecting the islands".

A NOAA WP-3D Orion Hurricane Hunter flew into the eye of category 5 Hurricane Lane on August 21. Storms with a chance of hitting the islands typically form in the warm waters off the coast of Mexico are blown west by the prevailing winds.

As they prepare for Hurricane Lane, they say it's easy to think back to the Category 4 hurricane 26 years ago.

The powerful cyclone is threatening to make landfall Thursday, with sustained winds reaching up to 230 kilometres per hour, making this storm potentially the largest to hit the U.S. state in 26 years, since Hurricane Iniki.

"People were buying cases of tiny water bottles".

The most recent National Weather service map, issued Thursday morning, projected the hurricane brushing past Hawaii Island early Friday morning. Now, one such giant hurricane is closing in on Hawaii.
