The state disaster management authority and the collectors of Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Krishnagiri, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Trichy and Karur have been instructed to be ready for flood mitigation works, an official quoted by HT said.

The situation also appeared to be slowly improving in and around Ernakulam and Thrissur where several people were rendered homeless due to incessant floods in the recent past. The airport operations may be affected if the water level in the Periyar river rises beyond 3 feet, officials said.

People living downstream of Periyar and Cheruthoni rivers have been warned that there is a possibility of inundation of banks as torrential rain pounded the state for the second day in a row.

"The situation is under control", he said.

Cochin International Airport Limited sources said operations at the airport had not been affected.

"The operational area is intact".

Twenty-nine persons have so far lost their lives in the heavy rains since August 8 and over 50,000 persons have been shifted to relief camps.

He said two Mi-17 V5 were pressed into service for distribution of relief material and winching operations.

Rajesh also went on to add that the main area to be affected by the shortage of power supply is the Palakkad town area because unlike the outskirts, the town does not have many facilities for water to subside.
