Donald Trump Won't Attend John McCain's Funeral, Says US Senator's Spokesman

The war-hero Arizona senator, who died of brain cancer Saturday, and the notoriously sharp-tongued president were bitter rivals, with Trump regularly lobbing insults while McCain opposed his initiatives and slammed his policies.

McCain, even as he neared death, disparaged Trump's presidency, rebuking the USA leader for his seeming embrace of Russian President Vladimir Putin's position at last month's Helsinki summit that Russia had not meddled in the 2016 US presidential election.

The White House flag once again was lowered to half staff on Monday after President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to honor John McCain, after much criticism of the way that Trump responded to the Arizona senator's death.

Bowing to pressure, President Donald Trump on Monday ordered American flags at US buildings lowered to half-staff for Sen.

Trump said Vice President Mike Pence will address a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol on Friday. Here's what we know about the service. The president also reportedly told Kelly to give the McCain family anything they need.

"There really is no room in the McCain family today to focus on anything but him". A private funeral will follow at the Naval Academy Chapel and McCain is to be buried at the academy cemetery.

McCain's family announced Monday that Whitehouse will be one of 15 pallbearers during Saturday's memorial at Washington National Cathedral. McCain will lie in state in the Arizona State Capitol on Wednesday.

Friction increased earlier this year after word surfaced that a West Wing aide had been dismissive of McCain during a closed-door meeting.

Keys had lost five straight matches against No. 4 Kerber, but turned to her forehand to rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory. Fourth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro beat Hyeon Chung 6-2, 6-3, finally completing the second round in late afternoon.

McCain's farewell statement did not mention Trump by name, but refers at some length to the populist and protectionist forces that helped propel Trump to the office McCain twice failed to achieve.

"We saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world", Obama wrote.

White supremacists who marched in Charlottesville a year ago chanted "blood and soil", a translation of a Nazi slogan.

McCain and Trump had clashed several times in the past. McCain was also alarmed by the rise of far-right populism in Europe, and the British break with the European Union that Trump has heralded.

Speaking to McCain's legacy, Graham said the late senator showed politicians like himself and Americans "that it's not about you".

"I spent more time with McCain during that campaign than he spent with his campaign manager", Karl marveled, pointing out that the maverick senator was "always on the record, always talking". "We are 325 million opinionated, vociferous individuals".

Among the many triumphs of John McCain's long political career was that he proved George Washington Plunkitt wrong.

Part of this outlook was manifested by his backing of a strong US-Israel relationship.
