USA state lawmaker to quit after exposing self on Baron Cohen show

If you caught the latest episode of Sacha Baron Cohen's 'Who is America?

Georgia state lawmaker Jason Spencer quit on Wednesday, effective July 31, in a letter submitted to Georgia House Speaker David Ralston after appearing in the segment alongside the comedian.

In a statement on Monday, Spencer apologised for the "ridiculously ugly episode" but he initially refused to step down. But he stopped short of resigning, saying that "I recently lost my primary election, so I will not be eligible to hold office next term".

Spencer previously faced calls for his resignation in 2016, after he told an African-American attorney that she might "go missing" if the state's confederate statutes were threatened.

"Sacha Baron Cohen and his associates took advantage of my paralyzing fear that my family would be attacked", he said. "I deeply regret the language I used at (Cohen's) request as well as my participation in the 'class" in general.

During his appearance in the second episode of the satirical series, Jason Spencer imitates a Chinese tourist, shouts the n-word and runs around backwards with bare buttocks out. "If I had not been so distracted by my fears, I never would have agreed to participate in the first place", he said in a statement obtained by CNN. "It is the n-word", he says.

"There is no excuse for this type of behavior, ever, and I am saddened and disgusted by it", he said.

Baron Cohen also tells Spencer he has developed a technique to identify terrorists disguised as women in burqa face coverings.

Spencer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the show "exploited" his state of mind "for profit and notoriety".

"I'll touch you! I'll touch you with my buttocks", the lawmaker, who was bent over with his trousers down, yelled as he moved closer towards Cohen.

Losing that seems like a fitting end to a man who tried to keep healthcare from his own constituents, but still, Who Is America? can, at times, be painful to watch-and not just because it demonstrates how stupid and/or evil and/or corrupt Americans really are, because the show doesn't just take on people in power.
