Trump’s Former Personal Lawyer: ‘I Am Not The Villain Of This Story’

His remarks fanned speculation about whether Cohen has any incriminating material on Trump and whether he will "flip" on his former boss, with remarks sharply at odds with a past declaration that he would 'take a bullet for the president'.

Cohen, Trump's longtime attorney and consigliere, is the subject of a federal criminal investigation led by the FBI and the United States attorney for the Southern District of NY, which executed an April 9 raid for evidence on Cohen's home, office and hotel room.

"My wife, my daughter, and my son have my first loyalty and always will", Cohen, who once said he would do anything for Trump, was quoted as saying.

"George asked Michael directly if he would choose to protect the president over his family, to which he replied, "[My family] is my first priority.

He also declined to answer questions about whether Donald Trump knew in advance about a 2016 meeting at Trump Tower.

Robert Mintz, a former federal prosecutor now in private practice, said that Cohen "has sent every signal he possibly can to prosecutors that he will put his own interests first and will jump at any deal that may save him from going to jail".

The consensus seems to be that Cohen is in fact planning to cooperate with the NY prosecutors investigating his business dealings, or that he is angling for a presidential pardon by signaling to his former boss that his allegiance is conditional. "His issue is that he doesn't want to be criminally charged or sent to jail and have his family destroyed", the source said.

"He will do it to only when he has to-in order to save himself", Avenatti said. "He wouldn't have to do this complicated dance in the media".

But when the President began to distance himself from his longtime personal attorney, reports circulated that Cohen felt abandoned and photos circulated of him palling around with Trump foes like actor Tom Arnold.

We lost once, and the others were a draw and, going back before that, Sweden have beaten England in big games. Zlatan continued: "But they believe in themselves and have a strong sense within the group".

"Hopefully we will pick someone who is just as outstanding" as Gorsuch, Trump told reporters ahead of a meeting with the president of Portugal. So his potential testimony involving President Trump is more likely to pertain to personal business than to the investigation into the 2016 presidential campaign.

Cohen did not specifically comment on what is under investigation.

"I don't know why he would do this", Napolitano said.

And Cohen could face criminal charges brought by the state of NY or another state that Trump would be powerless to pardon, as the constitution states the president may only pardon federal crimes.

Stephanopoulos asked Cohen if Trump had directed him to make that $130K hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

"Some people are speculating that this is Michael Cohen making a final threat/plea to POTUS for a pardon", Mitchell Epner, an attorney at Rottenberg Lipman Rich who was previously an assistant USA attorney for the District of New Jersey, told Business Insider.

Cohen's statements to ABC included, "I will not be a punching bag in anyone else's defense strategy".

"Being part of a joint defense agreement generally means your cooperation is with fellow targets and you're sharing confidential information", Coffey said. But don't try and convince me at this point that he deserves the benefit of the doubt any more than any of the people with whom he used to work, let alone the guy for whom he used to run errands. It was reported at the time that Cohen is being investigated for possible bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance violations. Under a court supervised plan, the attorneys are reviewing the fruits of the searches for items that are potentially covered by attorney-client privilege.
