Senate shuts down possibility of Russian Federation questioning USA officials

Five days after the Helsinki meeting, USA officials and lawmakers remained in the dark about what the leaders discussed in their two-hour, one-on-one session with only interpreters present.

Putin's proposal would have enabled Special Counsel Robert Mueller's prosecutors to speak with Russians they've accused of hacking during the 2016 USA presidential election, in exchange for Russian investigators questioning United States officials, such as former ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul and businessman Bill Browder, who is suspected of financial misdeeds in Russia.

"Well, you're right, I don't know what happened at that meeting", Coats said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado. "I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed, including stopping terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear.proliferation, cyber attacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace, North Korea and more".

In a CBS interview with anchor Jeff Glor earlier this week, the US President had said that he held Putin "personally responsible" for the election interference.

He tweeted that the summit had been a great success but not according to the "fake news" media who are the "real enemy of the people".

Putin has also signalled in the wake of his summit with Trump that he and the US President reached several agreements, but neither Trump nor the White House have confirmed any substantive agreements between the two countries.

The Russian leader praised Trump's mediation efforts in North Korea, but slammed his decision to pull out of the global accord curbing Iran's nuclear activities.

The Bloomberg report cited two people who attended a closed-door speech by Putin to Russian diplomats on July 19.

"OK. That's going to be special", he said, laughing.

The president's pro-Russia remarks often put the intelligence chief, who has criticized Russian Federation for years, in a tough position.

The White House on Wednesday indicated there was no recording of the one-on-one interaction between Trump and Putin, CNN reports.

Since he refused to back the USA intelligence community's assessment of Russian interference in 2016, Trump has alternated between trying to quell the political uproar he ignited and seeking to avoid backing down from his handling of the summit.

"There were suggestions, comments, thoughts by President Putin with respect to that inquiry".

A day after his meeting with Putin, Trump "clarified" his statements at a press conference saying he had full faith in the conclusion of USA intelligence agencies that Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 U.S. election.

In fact, committee Democrats tried to question Butina, but the Republican majority apparently shut it down so she wouldn't "tarnish" the National Rifle Association, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said Thursday on CNN's New Day.

Mr Browder told the BBC he was glad Mr Trump "isn't going to hand me over to President Putin" and said the United States leader should have immediately rejected the idea. I think that anybody that thinks Vladimir Putin doesn't have his stamp on everything that happens in Russian is misinformed.

Antonov said it's important to "deal with the results" of their first summit before jumping too fast into a new one, but that "Russia was always open to such proposals".

"So, no, I would not necessarily say that was the goal", she continued.

"I think that's an incredible offer", Trump responded in Helsinki.

The White House had to come out and issue another clarification, insisting it would not be happening.

In response to Trump's tweet, Clinton posted a more recent video, sharing her remarks from a 2016 campaign rally.
