The largest blaze, the Spring Fire in southern Colorado, has burned almost 61,000 acres, destroyed at least 104 homes and forced the evacuations of hundreds of residents, fire officials said.

A blaze burning for several days in Lake County jumped containment lines Saturday, prompting additional evacuation orders.

The fire has formed two distinct columns-one north of Highway 160 and one to the south. Officials say the North Spring Fire was very active yesterday and it continued to grow overnight. That's a bit below last year's acreage to date - which included the beginning of California's devastating fire season - but above the 10-year average of 2.3 million acres.

"These fires are an important reminder that we need to be vigilant this Fourth of July", said Fasano.

The forest service estimated the fire was burning about 300 acres as of 8 p.m. and firefighters are monitoring the blaze but haven't as of yet dedicated full suppression efforts.

Weather conditions the past weekend allowed for significant progress on the 416 Fire, according to the Monday report, with firefighters finishing burnout operations on the fire's southwestern edge. With more people living in harm's way and the costs of fire suppression spiraling up, it's hard to ignore the fact that the vast majority of wildfires are human-caused.
