LAPD Responds to Possible Hostage Situation at Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake

The suspect barricaded himself inside the supermarket with an unknown number of people, but was taken into custody "without incident", according to police.

About three hours after asking if anyone had information about her, Albert Corado told those who had tried to help his family that they'd heard the worst. It was not immediately known whether that woman was part of the shooting before the grocery store standoff.

Authorities say earlier in the day Atkins shot his grandmother seven times and wounded another woman, who he forced into a vehicle.

Authorities later caught up to him in Hollywood - using stolen vehicle technology - and exchanged gunfire with him during a auto chase.

The chase ended with Atkins crashing the auto outside the store and heading inside. Gunshots were fired during the chase.

Johnston and about 15 customers and co-workers ran out a back door to safety, he said.

The suspect ultimately surrendered at 6:30 p.m., walking out of the store with a group of hostages. He appeared to be handcuffed when he walked out. The grandmother was in critical condition while the other woman suffered a grazing wound. Once inside the supermarket, the suspect took customers and employees hostage "and held them against their will", said Moore.

Don Kohles was walking into the Trader Joe's in the city's Silver Lake section Saturday afternoon when a vehicle being chased by police crashed into a pole just outside.

Isner reaches first Wimbledon semifinal
It was the first time in the Open era that both men's semifinals went past 6-all in the deciding set of a Grand Slam event. He converted his second set point when Nadal netted a backhand, minutes past the tournament's 11 p.m. curfew.

A gun was found in the store, police said. Kohles hurried inside and he and others took cover as the suspect ran in. He had just crashed his auto outside the store after leading Los Angeles police officers on a chase through city streets.

Officer Mike Lopez, a police spokesman, says the man had fled from the scene after the Saturday afternoon shooting in South Los Angeles. A short time later, a woman was seen being dragged away from the store's entryway and then being treated by paramedics. Police believe the deceased victim was shot inside the store, possibly during a shootout between officers and the suspect. At least one officer returned fire. According to police, employees and dozens of customers were inside the store Saturday afternoon when an armed man crashed his vehicle on Hyperion Avenue and exchanged gunfire with officers. He allegedly shot and killed a store employee during the chaos before eventually giving himself up.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said the woman was killed inside the store. Her brother and sister had reached out on social media during the standoff for help finding her.

Another witness, Devin Field, tweeted that he was going inside the Trader Joe's when the vehicle crashed and the man "got out shooting".

Earlier, the LAPD tweeted: "There is an active police incident at the Trader Joe's near the intersection of Hyperion Ave and Griffith Park Blvd in #Silverlake".

The gunman exchanged fire with police and was struck in his left arm before running inside the store, police said.

It emerged one person was killed inside the Trader Joe's store.
