How the British media reacted to England's World Cup exit

England may have looked "confident" during their World Cup campaign but Croatia were the ones to "dominate" in Wednesday night's match, setting them up for a final against "formidable" France. It is a lot easier to be a player in these games than it is to be a fan, though.

I mean, this is some Tami/Coach Taylor level support right here, so it's no surprise that people were SHOOK. Due to how the bracket was shaping up, it appeared as though neither team would want to win the match, as whichever team wound up winning the group would be placed into the "side of death" that was forming. Before the World Cup started I said I would give my home up to see Croatia become World Champions!

Cristiano: "I said that Cristiano would stay because that's what I wanted, but I didn't know anything".

Harry Kane will likely come home from the World Cup with the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer and a burnished reputation as a feared forward. "They can see we are capable of progressing".

"They've been unbelievable the whole tournament but at the end of the day, it was our best chance ever and we haven't taken it", Reece said.

Southgate's England team lost 2-1 to Croatia to set-up a third/fourth play-off with Belgium on Saturday.

England meet Sweden in Samara on Saturday with a place in the semi-finals of the tournament up for grabs. "It is all about the set position and I got a hand to it".

Two years ago, when we lost to Iceland at Euro 2016, the team was booed off and there was a frightful atmosphere afterwards of anger and disillusionment. "We can be proud and we'll be back".

This time around, we could see the stars play, or we could see some more reserves to get some guys some minutes, and that makes picking here hard. And we won a knockout game. He will be full of confidence having played a big part in Les Bleus' stunning round of 16 win over Argentina, and scored the second in their quarterfinal win over Uruguay.

What epitomised all of that for me was the way the England fans behaved this week, after arriving in their thousands before the semi-final. I don't realistically think any of us did.

"A couple of weeks ago, I would have taken this result", said another England fan.

Numerous photos show the players embracing Southgate.
