England reach World Cup quarter-finals after slamming Colombia during penalties

Gareth Southgate's team won 4-3 on spot-kicks after the World Cup "Round of 16" match finished 1-1 following extra time.

England beat Colombia in a dramatic penalty shootout here in the city on Tuesday to reach the World Cup quarter-finals.

During England's clash with Colombia, on around 40 minutes, Three Lions midfielder Jordan Henderson looked to have been headbutted by Colombia player Wílmar Barrios - but no card was given, just after a free-kick was awarded to England on the edge of the box.

Colombia grew in stature during the first half of extra-time with Falcao heading wide from Mojica's cross, but England found a second wind as Danny Rose dragged a shot wide before Dier headed over when unmarked.

When Juan Cuadrado blazed horribly over the bar with the goal gaping 10 minutes from time with Colombia's first chance of the match it looked all over for them but there was a fiery sting in the tail of normal time.

And it was there that England overcame a miserable history with spot-kicks to book their first trip to the last eight since the 2006 tournament in Germany. "That's not being arrogant, that's not being ignorant, we could lose against Colombia on Tuesday there is no doubt".

Lukaku, playmaker Eden Hazard and winger Dries Mertens are all nursing injuries after Belgium's 5-2 victory over Panama. Japan, Senegal and Colombia are all possible opponents for Belgium and England in the round of 16.

Defeat to Belgium in their third group game on Thursday may not prove costly for England, as it means they arguably have a more straightforward route to the semi-finals. If Colombia can keep up their defensive form from the group stage, England could very well struggle to create chances in this game as well.

England was always the more purposeful side but they lacked the key final ball and needed a gift to take the lead.

Harry Kane's penalty against Colombia in the World Cup last-16 tie made him the first England player to score in six consecutive internationals since 1939.

At the older end of the scale, the 32-year-old Ashley Young said he would be keen to take a penalty if the Colombia game goes to a shootout. "We should now be the most positive we have ever been", Gary Neville told ITV following England's loss to Belgium last Thursday.

Having been fouled by Carlos Sanchez, Kane - after a lengthy delay caused by Colombia's protests to referee Mark Geiger - duly kept his cool to break the deadlock from 12 yards.

Fox (live in most markets) and Telemundo are both included in the "Fubo Premier" bundle, which has a channel package that is largely tailored towards global soccer fans and also has World Cup live streams available in 4K.

While the English may already be planning their World Cup celebrations, Pekerman and his side will be thinking otherwise and they certainly posses enough quality to book date with either Sweden or Switzerland in the last eight of Russian Federation 2018.
