Donald Trump Says Iran Will 'Suffer Consequences' In Angry Late-Night Tweet

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has cautioned US President Donald Trump about pursuing hostile policies against Tehran, saying 'war with Iran is the mother of all wars', but did not rule out peace between the two countries.

On Sunday night at half past 11 o'clock, President Trump sent a public message to Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart.

His Twitter post comes after Rouhani in an address in Iranian capital Tehran criticized Washington for its policy on Iran saying: "Peace with Iran would be the mother of all peace and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars".

"He is not in a position to act against Iran", said General Gholam Hossein Gheypour, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was reported by Al Jazeera to have backed Rouhani's earlier statements to disrupt regional oil shipments.

Washington initially planned to totally shut Iran out of global oil markets after Mr Trump abandoned the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, demanding all other countries to stop buying its crude by November.

"Peace with Iran would be the mother of all peace and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars", Rouhani said. Addressing a crowd of Iranian Americans, Pompeo had said that the people of Iran had been living under a tyrannical rule since the last 40 years and the U.S. stands by their protest.

Pompeo took particular aim at several of Iran's judicial, military and political leaders, accusing them of widespread corruption. "The United States is with you", he said.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo launched his own rhetorical assault on Iran's leaders, promising unspecified backing for Iranians unhappy with their government.

On Sunday in California, Pompeo was strongly critical of Iran, calling its religious leaders "hypocritical holy men" who amassed vast sums of wealth while allowing their people to suffer.

"The United States under President Trump will not stay silent", he said.

Pompeo called on "all governments to end their flirtations" with Iran's regime, and said "there's more to come" in terms of sanctions. "Iranians want to be governed with dignity, accountability and respect".

Following Washington's pullout from the Iran nuclear accord that stunned Washington's closest European allies, Pompeo on May 21 unveiled the "new strategy" to force Iran's submission to a dozen demands.

Iran has rejected talks with the US, and Rouhani has accused the USA of stoking an "economic war".

While 55 percent of Iranian Americans wanted Washington to work to advance democracy and civil rights in Iran, they were more divided on how a U.S. administration should go about achieving this.

"The bitter irony of the economic situation in Iran is that the regime uses its time to line its own pockets while its people cry out for jobs, reform and opportunity", Pompeo said.

With popular discontent over Iran's faltering economy and sliding currency, and the prospect of tough new USA sanctions, Iran's leaders have called for unity. The United States supports you.

Mark Dubowitz, head of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and a leading critic of Iran and the 2015 nuclear deal, called Pompeo's remarks a "powerful indictment of a corrupt and repressive regime", and suggested that USA support will help lead to the demise of the theocratic government.
