The grants, which the law caps at $125,000 for 2019, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The bill, signed by Vermont governor Phil Scott, has budgeted grants for almost 100 new remote workers in the first three years of the program, and 20 additional workers per year for every year after.

Starting in 2019, those who move to Vermont and work remotely for an out-of-state employer will be eligible to receive $10,000 over two years from the Vermont government to cover expenses such as relocation fees, a coworking space, a computer, or Internet connectivity. The $10,000 is created to go toward moving costs and other expenses needed to set-up a remote-working location, including computer equipment, but will be paid in two installments of $5,000 annually for two years.

If you're interested in the Vermont deal, act fast. "We need more people in the state and people participating in the workforce", said Joan Goldstein, the commissioner of Vermont's Department for Economic Development. In return, the state is hoping to get a much-needed boost to its economy. While that only seems like enough money for 25 people, Senator Michael Sirotkin told The New York Times that he could see grants going to as many as 100 people next year, since most workers will have less than $5,000 in annual resettlement expenses.

Heck, I'll flatter myself: they're probably also coolwith the idea of some slightly graying GenXers moving to the Green Mountain state, as long as you work for someone else and help prop up its tax infrastructure.

Remote workers: the state of Vermont wants you.

But there can be tax implications for living in one state and working in another.

Picturesque Vermont has a shrinking population and this effort is targeted at changing those demographics.
