Uruguay happy that Suarez, Cavani find their rhythm together

Russian coach Stanislav Cherchesov dismissed suggestions his men were under pressure but strikes by Luis Suarez, a Denis Cheryshev own goal and an Edinson Cavani effort proved to be too much in a dominant display from Uruguay against a Russia side that wilted in their first test of the tournament.

Both teams have won their opening two matches - in contrasting fashion - and already qualified for the round of 16.

Akinfeev did then come out to block a Rodrigo Bentancur chance, with Roman Zobnin just scrambling the rebound clear of Edinson Cavani, before Igor Smolnikov picked up a second yellow card and was sent off 35 minutes into his World Cup debut.

Russian Federation pushed hard in the second half to try and get back into the game, but Edinson Cavani scrambled home from a corner to seal a comprehensive win.

Although the match was not crucial, we wanted to take the first place [in the group].

"We throw our hearts into the game, including our joy, and always do our utmost at a hundred-percent level", Cavani told journalists in Samara.

The goal for Suarez is his second of the World Cup, which leads Uruguay. It was his second goal of the tournament after also scoring in the 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

A total of 22 players from the Uruguayan national football squad appeared for a training session on the pitch of the 45,000-seat capacity Samara Arena amid searing summer temperatures of about 33 degrees Celsius (90 degrees Fahrenheit).

In-form Cheryshev had the chance to draw Russian Federation level nearly immediately but his half-volley from Artem Dzyuba's knockdown was too close to Galatasaray shot-stopper Fernando Muslera, who won his 100th global cap. Tomorrow's match will decide on the victor of their Group A, which also enrolls the teams from Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Cherchesov also says that Russian football players rode roughshod over the beginning of such hard matches as the one against Uruguay was.

Uruguay doubled their lead when Diego Laxalt's shot took a wicked deflection off the leg of defender Cheryshev and flew past the despairing Akinfeev on 23 minutes.

- Uruguay have finished as first round group winners for just the fifth time, having done so previously in 1930, 1950, 1954 and most recently in 2010. The decision was confirmed after a video review.

Russia, meanwhile, will face Group B winners Spain after last night's 2-2 draw with Morocco.

Lucas Torreira, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder for Uruguay, addressed the persistent rumors that he's headed to Arsenal.

Uruguay are the first side to win all three of their group games without conceding a single goal since Argentina in 1998 (seven goals scored, none conceded).
