She did not play any clay-court tournaments before arriving in Roland Garros, preferring to focus on improving her fitness and sharpening her game outside of competition at her coach Patrick Mouratoglou's academy near Nice, France.

Top seed and Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep and Russia's Maria Sharapova comfortably beat their opponents and progressed to the third round of the French Open here on Thursday.

The world number one has openly admitted to struggling to cope with pressure of big matches in the past, but says she is feeling more relaxed on court.

Williams hit just three winners in the opener, while 22-year-old Barty could afford to bide her time: just two winners and four unforced errors. Next up for Williams is a last-32 clash against German 11th seed Julia Goerges and she said: "I'm going to be here, fighting my heart out".

The American was a break down again after dropping serve in the opening game of the second set. I just didn't make any shots.
