Mo Salah Reportedly Contemplating Leaving International Football

A huge marketing opportunity for the divisive Kadyrov, he subsequently made Salah an "honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic". A source with knowledge of Salah's position on the matter confirmed this stance to ESPN FC, adding that the player is now considering his future with his national team.

Footballer Mo Salah has been granted honorary citizenship of Chechnya at a banquet held by its leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.

Salah has been criticised by sections of Liverpool's fanbase, who have accused their star striker of allowing himself to be used as a propaganda tool by Kadyrov.

Images of Salah and the controversial leader quickly circulated online before the World Cup began, with Kadyrov visibly grasping the hand of the Egypt star as a show of solidarity.

"Mohamed Salah thanked us for the surprisingly warm and good reception, excellent attitude to the team, excellent living conditions and training", Mr Kadyrov posted on Russian social network site VK.

It is predicted a wave of fans will dash to Russian Federation ahead of England's last group game with Belgium on Thursday in Kalinigrad.

A supporter of (and supported by) Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin, Kadyrov's global reputation is marred with accusations of human rights violations and reports of extrajudicial killings and torture. "I gave Mohamed Salah a copy of the order and a pin at a celebratory dinner that I gave in honour of the Egyptian team".

In contrast to the reports, Egyptian FA board member Essam Abdel Fattah claims there is no truth to suggestions Salah is close to quitting. He is eating and laughing with his team-mates.

Salah is also unhappy that he's been dragged into issues beyond football and there is considerable friction with the Egypt FA, who had been locked in an image rights row with his representatives before the tournament.

Due to an injury inflicted by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the UEFA Champions League Final, Salah was not fit to play in Egypt's World Cup opener, a loss to Uruguay.

Egypt have already lost their place in the World Cup after losing both of their opening matches.
