Residents in western Germany are being told to stay indoors after two lions, two tigers and a jaguar escaped from a zoo.

Police in nearby Pruem confirmed today a report from the regional SWR broadcaster that the big cats had escaped from the zoo in the hilly Eifel area. In addition, wild animals have broken out of the zoo.

The big cats were only found after the water began receding, said mayor Andreas Kruppert from the town located close to the Luxembourg border.

A recent storm caused damage in some parts of the region, though it was unclear whether the animals escaped because of damage caused by the storm.

Hours later, authorities said those animals had, in fact, never left their cages.

In 2015, an orang-utan was shot dead after escaping from the Duisburg zoo, and a bear escapee from Osnabrueck suffered the same fate in 2017.

The 74-acre zoo offers many attractions including a cable auto and a miniature village.

The woman said that she felt sorry for the five-year-old lioness, explaining that she looked depressed in her small, three-feet-wide cage.
