Brazil breaks through late in hard-fought win

Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers pointed to the spot before heeding the protests of the Costa Rican players and consulting the video assistant referee (VAR).

Neymar and company could see themselves end the day in second place in the group if Serbia beats Switzerland later, but for now, Brazil moves into first and greatly boosts its chances of moving on to the knockout stage.

However, Neymar too joined Coutinho in the injury-time as he notched his first goal of the World Cup to hand Brazil 2-0 win over Costa Rica. "I think we need to change the coach and prepare new players for the next World Cup".

Serbia's Aleksandar Mitrovic scored on a header in the fifth minute, and Granit Xhaka had the tying goal in the 52nd minute with a powerful shot through a crowded penalty area.

Switzerland took a huge step towards the last 16 of the World Cup as Xherdan Shaqiri scored a brilliant solo 90th-minute victor against Serbia.

Navas pulled off a spectacular save in the second half to deny Neymar from close range, as the game opened up.

Brazil football star Neymar said the tears he shed following Friday's 2-0 victory here over Costa Rica were an expression of joy and triumph. In danger of ending in a draw, Brazil seemed nervous but composed itself through the seven minutes of injury time.

The clock had ticked past 90 minutes, and the five-times champions looked to be edging to a second disappointing draw, when Marcelo floated the ball in from the left and substitute Roberto Firmino headed across to Gabriel Jesus. But if Argentina wins, it can still advance depending on the result of the other match between Croatia and Iceland.

They have bought themselves, and Neymar, precious time.

Brazil outshot Costa Rica 23 to 4 over the course of the match with nine on target to zero for the CONCACAF squad. While the initial reactions were focussed on the victory, later many people also highlighted the goal scored by Neymar and his emotional outburst on the field.

Neymar, receiving from Philippe, nearly scored before he took out Keylor Navas amid scramble.

The Brazilian was then booked for furiously beating the ball into the ground when an attack was halted by the referee so a Costa Rica player could receive treatment.
