Australia bow out as Peru claim World Cup consolation victory

France topped the group with seven points, with Denmark runners-up on five after the teams played out a 0-0 draw.

The South Americans have one more shot at redemption this year when they square off against Australia.

Australia have their own concerns with a motivated Peru side in their final World Cup Group C match on Tuesday and will not worry about what France do against Denmark, according to coach Bert van Marwijk. Not that a player need be wholly judged on the club they play for, but the lack of pedigree among Socceroo strikers is telling when dissecting the lack of goals in the team.

"I know that Peru is a good team and have already showed it here", van Marwijk said.

They made up the majority of the 44,073 crowd in sauna-like conditions by Russia´s Black Sea coast, and the stadium exploded when Carrillo scored their first goal at a World Cup since 1982.

Australia pushed to reduce the deficit as Tim Cahill almost scored from inside the box with an audacious volley, but the attempt went wide and Peru escaped.

Luis Suarez has become the first Uruguayan player to score in three different editions of the World Cup (2010, 2014 & 2018). He added: 'I have a lot of confidence in the team I'm going to put out tomorrow, they have a lot of experience.

Back at the World Cup for the first time since 1982, Peru isn't leaving Russian Federation empty handed.

Full back Josh Risdon failed to deal with a long ball, allowing Guerrero possession at the left of the area, and the captain wheeled a cross into the path of winger Carrillo who hammered the ball into the left corner of the net. Both of its goals this tournament have come via Mile Jedinak penalty kicks, though, and it figures to take a bit more to beat a Peru side that, while 0-2-0 and already eliminated after two 1-0 losses, has played some of the most attractive, aggressive attacking soccer of any team in the field and has been punished by an inability to finish.

France fullback Djibril Sidibe was emphatic that Les Bleus wanted to retain top spot in the group and would bring their best against Denmark, music to the ears of Australia. Opting for a safety-first approach in the 2-1 defeat to France and the 1-1 draw against Denmark.

Daniel Arzani has been a much-talked about figure in making his World Cup debut in Russian Federation. It's last World Cup victory was a 4-1 result against Iran in the first round of the 1978 tournament in Argentina. "They are proud players and they play two times".

The 34-year-old was set to miss the World Cup having been given a 14-month ban after testing positive for a cocaine by-product contained in a tea. Ghana did it from 2006-2010.
