Newcastle owner Ashley insists Benitez will receive total market support

'They made me some offers to stay here for a few more years, plus I have to manage my family: if I chose to go to Newcastle and stay there, even in the Championship, it's also because of my family.

Benitez guided newly-promoted Newcastle to 10th in the Premier League having relied largely on loan signings and the players who won the Championship the season previously after being denied significant transfer funds by owner Mike Ashley.

The defender is being tipped for a call-up to England's World Cup squad but Benitez says Newcastle are unlikely to sell their star man this summer.

"It is really close relationship [between me and the fans], I said from day one they were pleased with our work, trying to do our best and they can see that".

Lascelles, speaking in an interview with Premier League Productions ahead of the visit from Chelsea, has impressed at the heart of the Newcastle defence and his performances have put him on the verge of an England call-up.

Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss Benitez, who took charge of Newcastle in 2016, helped the club secure a 10th-placed league finish this season, ending the campaign with a thumping 3-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

"Finally, I would like to thank the fans for their unrivalled support of Rafa and the team throughout the season".

'If we want to achieve something, we have to understand the way to do that.

"I think it is massive for this group of players, the way we managed the season with a good run, bad run, good run, bad run".

"We still have to do a lot of things, today is a day we must enjoy, but we know that we have plenty of room for improvement".

"Jamaal has a great potential, but if you cannot compete or you cannot keep the level of your team, then maybe you have to sell one player to be sure that you can bring in other players. There are conversations and we will see how far we go".

Rafa Benitez says Newcastle United are the only club he is in talks with and has ruled out a Napoli return.
