Harvey Weinstein's arrest is cathartic. But real victory won't be in court

For at least some of the dozens of women who came forward in recent months to accuse Weinstein of alleged sexual assault or misconduct, this is a day they have been waiting for.

According to CNN, Weinstein will face charges that "he raped one woman and forced another to perform oral sex on him".

Weinstein turned himself in to police in NY on criminal charges including rape and sexual misconduct based on allegations from two women. He was smiling at times, as he arrived at a police station with books, including a biography of Hollywood director Elia Kazan under his arm.

Judge Kevin McGrath ordered Mr Weinstein released on $1m cash bail.

Over six months after the first wave of bombshell allegations of rape, sexual assault, and harassment were made against Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced mogul turned himself for arrest in New York City Friday morning. The NYPD did the same, stating it "thanks these courageous survivors who have come forward".

That exposé and several ensuing reports ultimately led to a joint investigation by the Manhattan district attorney and the NYPD, while prosecutors continue to investigate his history of assault allegations in Los Angeles and London.

Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to the NY police on Friday.

Weinstein has repeatedly denied any instance of nonconsensual sex, though this is the first time formal charges have been handed down.

Since the allegations broke previous year, more than 80 women have come forward to share their stories of abuse at the hands of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Weinstein was formally charged with rape and other acts of sexual misconduct.

Asia Argento and Rose McGowan took to social media on the morning of May 25 to react to Harvey Weinstein's arrest in New York City. He agreed to not leave the New York State or CT without court permission, and has also agreed to wear a Global Positioning System tracking device. "We urge additional survivors and others with relevant information to call our Sex Crimes Hotline at 212-335-9373", District Attorney Cy Vance said. Detectives took Mr. Weinstein to the First Police Precinct for questioning, but as soon as the groping allegation came up, he halted the interview and asked for a lawyer, the police said.

She also tweeted, "We got you, Harvey Weinstein, we got you".

His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said Friday that he would fight to get the charges dismissed.

Scores of women have come forward to say Weinstein sexually abused and harassed them over the last three decades.

Besides the immediate satisfaction of seeing Weinstein face justice, McGowan said she firmly believes that his story, and the cultural quake that followed, will have a profound and lasting impact on how society treats powerful abusers who engage in sexual misconduct. Both happened in NY.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office is now reviewing five investigations into Weinstein - two from the Beverly Hills Police and three from the Los Angeles Police department, according to the Los Angeles Times.
