Riau Police Chief Inspector General Nandan said a group of suspected militants crashed a vehicle into the gate of the headquarters around 9 a.m.

Just hours after the church bombings, a further three people in another family were killed and two wounded when another bomb exploded at an apartment complex about 30km from Surabaya.

Indonesia's elite anti-terrorist force Densus 88 has responded with a series of raids in which several suspected militants have been shot dead - including the deputy commander of the local chapter of extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (Jad), believed responsible for numerous attacks.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge - and sparked a string of foreign government travel advisories - as the world's biggest Muslim-majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

The incidents were followed by a series of gunfight between the police and terrorists in the province and North Sumatra province that killed three militants, according to the police.

Two policemen were injured by the sword attacks and another was killed after being hit by the minivan which was trying to escape from the compound of the headquarters, he added.

The next day, members of another family blew themselves up at a police station in the city, wounding 10.

Adjunct Senior Commissioner Sunarto, spokesman of the Riau Provincial Police, informed the press here on Wednesday that the four were shot dead after getting out of a minivan earlier used to attack police officers.

The terror attack in Riau occurred three days after a similar attack on the Surabaya police headquarters in East Java.

The police are hunting for the militants, according to the police chief.
